You may have heard that Provident Charter West (PCS West) is a “charter school”. But what does that really mean? And how does that make us different from other schools? The answers may surprise you!
- We Are Public
That’s right: charter schools are also public schools. We’re located in the Ambridge Area School District but we enroll students from any district – you don’t have to be a resident of Ambridge to attend PCS West. Our charter school authorization is renewed every five years based on agreed upon expectations for educating students, including state standards and testing.
- We Are Tuition-Free
Just like a public school, PCS West is tuition-free for all 1st-5th grade students.
- We Are Mission Driven
PCS West was founded by a group of educators that are passionate about serving students with language-based learning differences. We saw a need in our community and took action! We have an official mission statement that guides us: “Provident Charter School is designed for children with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences to access their potential by providing a high-quality, well-rounded education that is delivered through multisensory instructional methods and individual learning plans. Our students move into high school prepared to succeed and confident in their own abilities.”
- We Put Students First
Gone are the days of one-size-fits-all learning. Charter schools are usually centered on the needs of the student, often through a personalized curriculum or specialized offerings. And PCS West is no exception. We celebrate the uniqueness of each child by designing lessons based on the many ways a child can learn; and we support each individual with personal attention and multimodal teaching. We take advantage of our small class sizes to build solid, affirming relationships that help students grow into the best version of themselves.
- We Are Free to Innovate
Because of our strong commitment to our mission we are an exciting hub of innovation and vision. At PCS West, our highly qualified teachers are able to teach in creative ways, supported by like-minded teachers and staff. Our innovative teaching model features two full-time professional teachers in every classroom for a low student-to-teacher ratio with dynamic experiential, hands-on and multi-sensory instruction. We are up-to-date in the latest assistive technology for our students and every PCS West student can access our unique TAEKWONDO PROGRAM, which helps develop self-confidence, self-discipline and respect while providing physical fitness.
- We Keep It Small
Parents looking for a small school, where everyone knows their name, often look to charter schools to find a greater sense of community. At PCS West, community is at the core of our safe and deliberately small 1st-5th grade charter school. Every child gets personalized attention, caring instructors, and a close-knit academic environment. Communication between teachers and family is frequent. Special events invite families to our school to celebrate our success and cheer on our growth. We lean on parents as our partners in supporting our school values of Perseverance, Compassion and Self-Control – encouraging their children to make good choices both inside and outside the classroom.
